The Artist
Meet Rekha
Hi there! I'm a multidisciplinary visual artist who tells stories through art, film, and digital media. My imagination is always active - I love shaping an initial concept and collaborating with a team to bring it to life, whether that means developing an idea for a documentary or narrative film, transforming my original hand-painted artwork into private-label designs for brands, creating immersive art experiences infused with movement, music, and emotion, or managing post-production for studios and indie scripted content.
I recently made my debut as a writer, director, and producer with my short documentary, Art For The Soul – A Creative Journey for Well-Being, an official selection of the New York Short Film Festival (May 15–21, 2026), where it premiered on May 16. The film is a personal project born from my deep belief in the transformative power of imaginative storytelling as a tool to inspire, educate, and entertain. This perspective runs through all of my work, whether in film or fine art, and I'm always pushing the boundaries to explore how art and creativity intersect with identity, healing, and mental well-being. Beyond documentary, I'm also developing narrative projects, with two completed scripts - a short film and a feature - and more in the works.
In my artwork, I love using bold color, pattern, texture and blending traditional and digital techniques. Through experimentation and creative play, I explore different styles and mediums.
The Creative Journey
A little history...
My artistic journey began with fabric painting and hand-dyeing. What started as a fun silk painting class in high school has grown into a lifelong passion for art and design!
Today, my creative focus spans watercolor, mixed media collage, surface pattern design, illustration, animation, and documentary or narrative film development, including scriptwriting and concept work. I also hold professional training from the Warner Bros. Discovery Access Post Production Coordinator Training Program (Cohort 8, 2025), which has deepened my understanding of the full filmmaking pipeline from production through post.
For my hand-painted artwork, I enjoy exploring a variety of mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil, graphite, gel pens, paint pens, and pen and ink. On the digital side, my favorite tools include my iPad and Apple Pencil, along with Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Fresco, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.
Inspiration
My signature style
My art style is shaped by my East Indian heritage, global wanderings, childhood memories, and the beauty I find in everyday moments. I describe my work as whimsical, painterly, and textured - bold in color, high in energy.
My focused practice centers on watercolor painting and mixed media collage. Though I love to experiment, and over the years I have explored acrylic paints, acrylic inks, alcohol inks, pastels, colored pencils, graphite, and dip pen and ink - these explorations have found their way back into my core practice, giving my work its layered, vibrant quality. My practice also includes digital illustration, working primarily in Procreate and Photoshop - though every digital piece begins the same way: pencil, eraser, and sketchbook first.
At the heart of it all is my daily sketchbook practice. It is where ideas are born, skills are refined, and my style continues to reveal itself. More than a creative tool, my sketchbook has been a source of healing, well-being, and self-discovery - and many of the pieces that begin there evolve into fully developed original artworks, surface design concepts, and digital illustrations. My work has been exhibited in group shows including the Consulate General of India in New York as part of the RACHNA Indian Art & Literature Exhibition, the Affordable Art Show in Jersey City, and other group art exhibitions. I am also a Peters Valley School of Craft grant recipient.
Behind the Work
My Design Process
My design process begins with a sketch or storyboard, tailored to the project's specific needs.
I blend traditional and digital techniques to create unique and captivating assets — then deliver design concepts, hand-painted artwork, or digitally rendered files ready for online use or printing on various surfaces.
