Hand-dyeing – Basic Shibori Techniques

In this workshop, we’ll work with indigo dye and learn basic shibori techniques to create patterns and dye fabric. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding and manipulating the fabric before submerging it in a dyeing it in indigo dye. Bring a white t-shirt or blank home accessory item that you would like to dye. We’ll spend an afternoon covering the following topics:

• Learning about shibori and the history behind this dyeing technique
• How to fold, clamp, stitch and bind fabric to produce different patterns
• Overview of the supplies and materials needed
• Applying shibori technique to dye paper
• Practical application – how this skill can be used to design new product, packaging, paper and fabric gift wrap
• Actual practice with shibori dyeing technique

What’s Included:

  • All tools and materials will be supplied for use in class (white t-shirt or other blanks not included – please bring your own if you want to)
  • Fabric and paper for you to dye and take home
  • Instruction sheet and resource list to take home

Cost: $125 per person**

** There must be a minimum of 4 people enrolled for this class to run. If a class cancels due to low enrollment, you will receive a full refund. This is class is intended for small groups. Maximum capacity is 4 people.

Cancellation policy: If you can no longer attend the workshop, you must cancel 48 hours prior to the workshop in order to receive a full refund. Cancellations that occur less than 48 hours in advance will be refunded 50%.
