We’ll be launching our new collection of pillows made with hand-woven and hand-dyed batik fabrics from Chantal, an artisan from rural Togo. At Divine NY & Co., part of our mission is to help women artisans around the world and by purchasing our batik cloth from Chantal and others like her, we give them a opportunity to earn a fair wage that will help change their lives, support their families and expand their businesses. .

We’ll also have our new collection of sari throws made from both recycled and new saris designed and hand-crafted locally in New York City. Let us help you custom design a sari throw in colors to suit your home style. We work with the women of Wishwas, a non-profit organization with operations in Queens and Brooklyn that provides underprivileged immigrant women in the NYC area an opportunity to earn a fair wage while acquiring new skills.

As the hot summer months are just around the corner, it’s time to jazz up your bedroom in summer themes and décor.

From lightweight fabrics to softer color palettes, there are many ways to get creative and embrace the summer season!

Here are 5 tips to prepare your bedroom for summer.

1. Change your color palette to lighter shades and pastels.

2. Replace heavier bedding with lightweight cotton comforters or coverlets; layer fabrics to create dimension and depth.

3. Choose patterned bed sheets; mix patterns and colors to keep it interesting.

4. Bring in fresh flowers. Simple bud vases with single stem flowers add a romantic touch and infuse new energy in the air.

5. Switch to sheer or linen curtains; you can change the entire look of your bedroom just by changing up the window treatments.

Whether you are a DIY bride or working with a wedding planner, the colors and fabrics you select are one of the most important details that will set the mood and atmosphere to create a truly magical and special occasion.

From the flowers to table displays, from wedding invites to place cards, the colors you select will set the tone for the entire event.

Colors
To create a cohesive and elegant affair, it is best to limit your color palette to 2 or at most 3 color combinations.

But with so many different color combinations to select from, how do you narrow your choices down?

1. Start with color. What is your favorite color? Is there a dominant color theme in your home or wardrobe that you are drawn to?
2. Start with location. Where will your wedding be held? Is it a destination wedding? Is it a country setting or will it take place in the heart of the city?
3. Start with the season. Softer colors like pink, lavender, blue, burgundy would be nice for a spring/summer wedding whereas olive green, black, purple, navy or red would be perfect for a fall/winter wedding.

Pink and Burgundy
Nothing spells romance like pink and burgundy! Pink is flirty, playful and fun while burgundy adds a dramatic flavor and elegance.

Purple and Blue
Purple is the color of royalty and will give your wedding a majestic feel. Purple is also glamorous, sophisticated and classy! Pairing with a lighter shade of blue will give your wedding a modern edge while keeping it fun loving, vibrant and fresh.

Olive Green, Black, White
This modern color palette of olive green, black and white oozes with sophistication, charm and elegance! For those planning an environmentally conscious wedding, green is a prominent color to have.

Fabrics

Chair décor
Tulle is a lightweight, fine netting fabric that is perfect to use for chair décor. It’s easy to DIY and affordable! Tulle comes in a wide variety of colors. Sew in sequins to add a touch of glamor and sparkle! You can find tulle for as little as $0.65/yard at online fabric retailers such as Fabric Direct.

Another easy DIY and low-cost approach to chair décor is to cut broadcloth (a soft cotton) into strips to create ribbons that can be tied to the back of a chair. It’s perfect for an outdoor wedding. Broadcloth is available for as low as $1.99/yard at Fabric Direct.

Ceiling drape
To create an elegant ceiling drape, use a lightweight easy to drape fabric such as tulle, gossamer, chiffon or organza.

Tulle and gossamer are the least expensive and are available by the roll at places like Shindigz.

Table décor

An elegant runner made from silk in a solid color or a print, decorated with fresh flowers and candles makes a beautiful centerpiece and a lovely table setting for your guests to enjoy. A standard table runner measures 13.5” wide x 72” in length. 2 yards of silk that is 44” wide will make approximately 3 table runners. Silk is expensive at $19/yard. A Less expensive alternative: use cotton, linen or broadcloth and stamp or stencil a design with a metallic paint or ink along the border of the runner. Adding sequins to will add glamour and sparkle. You can also use a cotton batik printed fabric and add stripes of silk to create something truly grand and unique!
