Summer Sundays: New Creative Workshop Series

Get ready for the launch of Summer Sundays, our new creative summer workshop series! One Sunday month, we’ll spend the afternoon exploring our creative side. Each month, you’ll learn different fabric design and printmaking techniques that you can then apply to your own product design ideas or home decorating projects. Each session is intended for small groups of 4 people. So gather your friends and enjoy Summer Sundays!

Workshops will be held on select Sundays, 12:00 – 5:00pm at Gathering Floral Design, 5 Tudor City Place, New York, NY, 10014 in Midtown East (walking distance from Grand Central Terminal). Registration is required for each session.

Summer Sundays - new workshop series

Here are the details about our new creative workshop series:

Silk Scarf Painting: Designing with Metallic Outliners
Dates: Sunday, June 25th*
Time: 12:00 – 5:00pm
Location: Gathering Floral Design, 5 Tudor City Place, New York, NY 10014
Cost: $125**

In this silk painting workshop, you’ll learn how to use metallic outliners and silk paints to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind silk scarf. Our exclusive patterns will be provided. We’ll spend an afternoon covering the following topics:
• The art of silk painting – what makes this art form unique
• Overview of materials and supplies used
• How to trace your design on silk
• How to create a design using metallic outliners
• How to work with silk paints
• The different pattern effects that salt, sugar and rubbing alcohol has when combined with silk paints

What’s included:
• All tools and silk paints will be supplied for use in class
• One 11” x 60” silk scarf to paint on and take home
• Our exclusive patterns (for use in class)
• Instruction sheet and resource list to take home

Each participant will leave with their own one of a kind silk scarf!

Summer Sundays - Silk Painting Workshop in NYC

Block Printing on Paper or Fabric
Dates: Sunday, July 9th*
Time: 12:00 – 5:00pm
Location: Gathering Floral Design, 5 Tudor City Place, New York, NY 10014
Cost: $125**

In this block printing workshop, you’ll learn a modern method to create designs on a linoleum block and print patterns on paper or fabric. We’ll spend an afternoon covering the following topics:

• Brief history of block printing
• Traditional vs. modern techniques of block printing
• Overview of supplies and tools used
• Types of paper and fabric to use for best results
• Types of inks
• Creating a design and transferring it onto a linoleum block
• Carving techniques using a lino cutter
• How to carve monograms
• How to create a repeat pattern
• Actual practice printing on paper or fabric
• How to create multi-color prints
• Practical application – how this skill can be used to design new product, stationery, product packaging, gift wrap

What’s included:
• All tools needed will be supplied for use in class
• 1 linoleum block to carve on and take home
• Block printing paper to print on
• Cotton fabric square to print on
• Our exclusive patterns (for use in class)
• Instruction sheet and resource list to take home

Each participant will leave with their own hand-carved linoleum block and a sample of their block printed design work.

Summer Sundays - Block Printing Workshop in NYC

Hand-dyeing – Basic Shibori Techniques
Dates: Sunday, August 6th*
Time: 12:00 – 5:00pm
Location: Gathering Floral Design, 5 Tudor City Place, New York, NY 10014
Cost: $125**

In this workshop, we’ll work with indigo dye and learn basic shibori techniques to create patterns and dye fabric. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding and manipulating the fabric before submerging it in a dyeing it in indigo dye. Bring a white t-shirt or blank home accessory item that you would like to dye. We’ll spend an afternoon covering the following topics:

• Learning about shibori and the history behind this dyeing technique
• How to fold, clamp, stitch and bind fabric to produce different patterns
• Overview of the supplies and materials needed
• Applying shibori technique to dye paper
• Practical application – how this skill can be used to design new product, packaging, paper and fabric gift wrap
• Actual practice with shibori dyeing technique

What’s Included:
• All tools and materials will be supplied for use in class (white t-shirt or other blanks not included – please bring your own if you want to)
• Fabric and paper for you to dye and take home
• Instruction sheet and resource list to take home

Summer Sundays - Hand-Dyeing, learn shibori in NYC
* These classes will also be offered on the following dates: Silk Painting – 9/10/17 | Block Printing – 10/8/17 | Hand-Dyeing – 10/22/17 (please sign up for our email newsletter to be notified when registration opens)
** There must be a minimum of 4 people enrolled for this class to run. If a class cancels due to low enrollment, you will receive a full refund. This is class is intended for small groups. Maximum capacity is 4 people.
