Designing with Adobe Capture CC

by Rekha on September 9, 2017

Have you heard of Adobe Capture CC?

It’s an app that allows you to turn any image into a themed pattern or graphic that you can use in your creative projects on your desktop or mobile devices. You can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

It’s pretty cool…first, take a picture on your phone camera. Then, open the app, select Patterns from the top menu and upload the image. You will then see different pattern design options to select from. Play around with the different designs and see what the app can create for you with a click of a button.

Here are some examples of designs I created using Adobe Capture:

While in Toronto at Square One shopping mall, I spotted this leaf pattern that was part of the mall decor. I snapped a picture of it and uploaded to the Adobe Capture app. With a few clicks of the different pattern options, this beautiful print was created!

Here are a few more examples of what the app can do. While dining at Brar Indian restaurant in Brampton, Ontario (near Toronto). I snapped a picture of these designs that were on the menu card and converted them into striking repeat patterns.

Finally, this is my favorite pattern because this is based on an original marbled design I created with polymer clay.

So far, I’ve used this app to mainly create repeat patterns, however know that this app can do more than that! The apps other features include:
Shapes – capture a shape image with your camera phone and Adobe Capture will convert it into a vector image.
Colors – pick up a specific color from a photo and save it as a color theme that you can use later for other design projects.
Brushes – create unique brushes based on a photo you took.
Looks – can be used for video content. Capture light and color content from photos and use them later in your video projects.

In my opinion this app does not replace the detailed and technical design work of a textile designer, graphic designer or any other digital designer. However, you can use this tool as way to create quick patterns that can later be used for inspiration or I like to use them as backgrounds for product packaging materials. For example, I am using the marbled repeat pattern as the background for my new Thank You postcards.

So what do you think of Adobe Capture CC? I’d love to see what designs you create with this app. Share it with me on Instagram or on Twitter, by tagging me @DivineNY.
